Fire/Safety Assistant

Job Objectives

  • Ensure fire safety within the Terminal by conducting fire prevention activities, maintaining firefighting equipment and responding to emergencies.
  • Participating in fire drills, maintaining fire engines and supporting environmental cleanliness through de-greasing, dust suppression, and hopper washing.

Department: HSSE & Sustainability

Office: GDNL Terminal ‘E’ Building Apapa Port Complex, Apapa Wharf, Lagos-Nigeria.

Reports to: Head of HSSE & Sustainability

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Fire Prevention – Conduct safety patrols, gas tests, and enforce fire prevention measures.
  • Equipment Maintenance – Inspect, maintain, and report on firefighting equipment and fire engines. 
  • Emergency Response – Respond to fire incidents and execute emergency evacuation plans.                                                        
  • Cleaning & Dust Control – Oversee quay apron washing, dust suppression, and hopper cleaning.

  • Training & Awareness – Carry out weekly toolbox/ safety catch-up sessions as well as support fire drills and educate personnel on fire safety
  • Incident Reporting – Document and escalate accidents, near misses, and hazards.                                                
  • Other Duties – Perform additional tasks as assigned by Management.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   

 

Competence Requirements

  • At least 30 years as at time of application.
  • Basic fire safety knowledge
  • Understanding of firefighting equipment
  • Foundational skills in basic firefighting or first aid (or a willingness to learn).
  • Understand emergency response basics
  • Awareness of dust and fire hazard conditions.
  • Alert, vigilant, physically fit and able to work under pressure.
  • Communicate effectively and work well as part of a team.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       

Educational Qualification

  • West African Senior School Certificate (WASSCE / SSCE / GCE / NECO / NABTEB).

Professional Qualification

  • Basic Firefighting, Fire Warden, or First Aid certification is a strong advantage (or a mandatory willingness to undergo immediate corporate training).

Desired Experience

  • Prior experience in a safety, security, or firefighting role within a port terminal, logistics hub, or heavy industrial facility is highly preferred.
  • Ability to operate a fire engine.
