Job Summary
The Mechanical Workshop Machinist is responsible for producing precision parts, tools, and components from metal and other materials using a variety of machining equipment. The role involves applying sound mechanical engineering knowledge, monitoring machining processes, and adjusting machine parameters or materials as necessary to achieve accurate and high‑quality output.
Duties and Responsibilities
Machining & Technical Operations
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and engineering specifications to determine job requirements.
- Set up, operate, adjust, and maintain various machining tools such as lathes, milling machines, drilling machines, and grinders.
- Monitor and control machine feed rates, speeds, and cutting tools to achieve required precision.
- Fabricate precision parts, tools, fixtures, and components using approved machining techniques.
- Inspect finished parts using precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, gauges) to verify conformance to specifications.
- Detect product defects or machine malfunctions and take corrective action promptly.
Maintenance & Safety
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on machinery to ensure optimal performance and extend equipment lifespan.
- Ensure proper workshop housekeeping and maintain a clean, safe, and organized working environment.
- Observe all workshop safety standards, operating procedures, and mandatory use of PPE.
Documentation & Reporting
- Keep accurate records of machining activities, work performed, materials used, and time spent on tasks.
- Report deviations, equipment faults, safety concerns, or material inconsistencies to the Workshop Supervisor.
Competencies Required
Qualifications
- OND in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
Technical Skills
- Strong working knowledge of machining processes, engineering principles, and metalworking techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and measurement data.
- Proficiency with machining tools and precision measuring instruments.
- Basic troubleshooting and machine adjustment capability.
