Job Summary

The ESG & Sustainability Manager is responsible for driving the Refinery's sustainability agenda by developing and implementing ESG strategies, policies, frameworks, and initiatives that support business resilience, regulatory compliance, responsible operations, and long-term value creation. The role leads sustainability reporting and disclosure activities, manages ESG performance and materiality assessments, coordinates sustainability assurance processes, supports stakeholder engagement, and ensures alignment with applicable international standards and frameworks including IFRS S1, IFRS S2, GRI, UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Dangote Group sustainability requirements. The incumbent serves as the focal point for ESG integration across the business, ensuring sustainability considerations are embedded into operational, commercial, investment, and governance processes.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

 

1.    Develop and implement the refinery's ESG and sustainability strategy in alignment with corporate objectives, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices. 
2.    Support implementation of Dangote Group Sustainability and Climate Change Policies across refinery operations and business functions. 
3.    Establish sustainability goals, performance targets, key performance indicators (KPIs), and monitoring mechanisms to track ESG performance. 

4.    Coordinate periodic reviews and updates of the refinery's ESG strategy, sustainability roadmap, and related action plans. 
5.    Drive the integration of ESG considerations into corporate planning, project development, investment evaluations, and decision-making processes. 

6.    Lead the preparation and publication of annual sustainability reports, ESG reports, and other sustainability-related disclosures. 
7.    Ensure compliance with applicable reporting frameworks and standards, including GRI, IFRS S1, IFRS S2, SASB, UN Global Compact, and other relevant disclosure requirements. 
8.    Coordinate sustainability reporting schedules, data collection activities, and contributions from various departments and business units. 
9.    Review, validate, and verify ESG performance data to ensure accuracy, completeness, and audit readiness prior to publication. 
10.    Manage sustainability disclosure requests and information submissions from investors, lenders, regulators, customers, and ESG rating agencies. 
11.    Coordinate sustainability governance structures, forums, working groups, and management committees to ensure effective oversight of ESG matters. 
12.    Facilitate sustainability and ESG performance reviews for Executive Management, Board Committees, and other governance bodies. 
13.    Develop, maintain, and periodically update ESG policies, procedures, standards, guidelines, and governance frameworks. 

14.    Monitor emerging sustainability legislation, ESG trends, disclosure requirements, and regulatory developments that may impact refinery operations. 
15.    Identify, assess, and monitor ESG-related risks and opportunities affecting the refinery and its stakeholders. 
16.    Support enterprise risk management processes by incorporating sustainability and ESG-related risk assessments. 
17.    Develop and implement mitigation measures and action plans for material ESG risks and sustainability-related issues. 
18.    Monitor stakeholder expectations and evolving market requirements relating to sustainability performance and disclosure. 
19.    Develop ESG scorecards, sustainability dashboards, and performance tracking systems to monitor progress against established objectives and commitments. 
20.    Analyse ESG performance trends and identify opportunities for continuous improvement and value creation. 
21.    Recommend corrective actions and performance improvement initiatives where gaps or underperformance are identified. 
22.    Coordinate engagement with regulators, investors, lenders, customers, host communities, industry associations, and other stakeholders on sustainability-related matters. 
23.    Support materiality assessments, stakeholder surveys, consultations, and engagement programmes to identify priority ESG issues. 
24.    Manage sustainability-related communications, enquiries, presentations, and information requests from internal and external stakeholders. 
25.    Promote sustainability awareness and foster a culture of environmental, social, and governance responsibility across the organization. 
26.    Support the implementation of human rights, diversity and inclusion, social impact, local content, employee wellbeing, and community development programmes. 
27.    Monitor and report on the implementation and effectiveness of social sustainability commitments and initiatives. 
28.    Support the development and implementation of just transition programmes and initiatives affecting employees, contractors, and host communities. 
29.    Coordinate sustainability assurance activities and support internal and external audits relating to ESG performance and disclosures. 
30.    Ensure compliance with applicable sustainability commitments, corporate standards, and regulatory obligations. 
31.    Provide leadership, direction, and technical guidance to ESG team members and assigned project teams. 
32.    Supervise, coach, develop, and mentor ESG personnel, direct reports, and graduate trainees to build organizational capability. 
33.    Drive a culture of accountability, transparency, ethical business conduct, and sustainability excellence throughout the refinery. 
34.    Support cross-functional collaboration with operations, maintenance, projects, procurement, finance, human resources, technical services, and other departments to achieve sustainability objectives. 
35.    Prepare periodic sustainability performance reports, executive presentations, management updates, and Board reports. 
36.    Perform any other sustainability, ESG, governance, reporting, or stakeholder engagement duties as may be assigned by the Head, Sustainability & Decarbonisation.

 

Key Requirements

Education and Work Experience
•
   Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Sustainability, Social Sciences, Business Administration, Economics, or a related discipline.
•    Preferred: Master's Degree in Sustainability, Environmental Management, Climate Change, Energy Management, ESG, Business Administration (MBA), or a related field.
•    Minimum of 8-12 years relevant professional experience in sustainability, ESG, environmental management, sustainability reporting, corporate responsibility, climate change, or related disciplines.
•    At least 5 years of experience in ESG, sustainability, environmental management, sustainability reporting, corporate responsibility, or climate-related roles.
•    Experience within the refining, oil and gas, petrochemical, manufacturing, energy, mining, or other heavy industrial sectors.
•    Demonstrated experience in sustainability reporting, ESG disclosures, stakeholder engagement, and sustainability performance management.
•    Proven experience coordinating and managing cross-functional sustainability programmes, ESG initiatives, and organizational improvement projects.
•    Experience working with sustainability reporting frameworks and standards such as GRI, IFRS S1, IFRS S2, SASB, TCFD, CDP, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is desirable.
•    Experience supporting sustainability audits, assurance engagements, ESG ratings assessments, and regulatory reporting requirements is an added advantage.
